The Big Map
The 105′X 140′ map of Southeast Asia was a focal point of LZ Lambeau. Veterans returned again and again to retrace their tours of duty and connect with fellow veterans. Veterans who has tried for forty years to put Vietnam behind them now proudly wrote their names on the map, wrote memorials to those they had lost, and share, many for the first time, their stories with their families. The Big Map and some of its stories can be found on this website. The original is now a treasured artifact in the Wisconsin Veteran Museum’s permanent collection.
In September 2010, Wisconsin Public Televison staff photographer Jim Gill, with the assistance of Wisconsin Veterans Museum Curator Jeff Kollath, and the moral support of nearly a dozen more, painstakingly documented the ‘Big Vietnam Map’ in the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. After taking several thousand photographs – one at a time – Gill wove together and overlapped the photos using Zoomify software. Gill, along with UW-Madison student Ashley Jensen developed this website, while UW-Madison student Evan Usher wrote and provided much of the historical and biographical information.
